The March 11th magnitude 9 earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan, made parts of Tohoku region that were closer to the epicenter sink by several centimeters resulting in making the areas flood permanently or at the hours when the high tide pushes the sea water inland. In Kesennuma city the destroyed areas around the port were permanently flooded as the earth sank by 74cm. Three months after the earthquake there was still a lot of work to be done for clearing the area from the ruble.
